Canon Point: Post the Negana Luna and Ryu Gee story arc, just before Granny summons the gang back to Eshalotto for the final confrontation against Indra.

Setting:

Lay of the Land

It’s actually very difficult to gage the timeline and physical location in the world of Gokudo no Manyuki as everything is pretty much fictitious. While the world that they live in is very “Earth” like…as in terrestrial with life forms existing on it, it is not Earth as we know it and it doesn’t have a title. A lot of the social constructs within the series tend to free float as well. You may have a country that is ruled by a king or some kind of deity, but the political, economic, and other social structures lack much in the way depth—mostly due to the fact that Gokudo no Manyuki is of the action/fantasy/comedy variety and is 26 episodes in length. It is a series that is more concerned with moving from one adventure to the next as opposed to building deep, complex foundations…even at the cost of humorous continuum errors. (And let's not forget the want for a fluid story line.)

While the actual name of the world and the timeline is rather ambiguous, Gokudo no Manyuki does contain several known kingdoms and locations, many of which represent locations and time periods that are familiar to Earth. The overall atmosphere tends toward medieval or ancient portrayals of the world making it easy to identify with. There are touches of modern influence like a cloud car and microphones, but otherwise Gokudo no Manyuki is very much living in the past.

Eshalotto: Eshalotto is the ancestral home of Rubette La Lette and the story’s anti-hero, Gokudo. Eshalotto is the last word in dungeons and dragons style medieval Europe with castles and knights, broad swords and armor. It was a country that was relatively free of magic until the Queen of the Magic Kingdom came disguised as a fortune teller to Eshalotto in order to tell the King that he would kill his son, which he eventually does after letting himself be swayed by the Magic King. The Magic Queen brings the prince back to life, but she accidentally splits him in two halves, Gokudo and his ‘brother’ Seiji. Once the Magic King is sealed back in the Magic Kingdom, Eshalotto is once again free of magic and like medieval Europe the people become wary of magic.

Parmette: The second land we are introduced to is the Parmettian Empire, or simply Parmette. Parmette resembles ancient Egypt with its blocked clay structures, its desert landscapes, and its pyramids. It is a kingdom awash with magic and the magical creatures that roam the landscape are a great tourist attraction for the country. Parmette is a matriarchal kingdom as well and all of the kings who have ever ruled in the land are chosen by the princesses who are gifted with the Star of Dawn on their foreheads. The Star of Dawn is a magical symbol granted to the princesses by Parmette’s deity. When the princesses become of marrying age they choose their champions to participate a race, the Race to Be King. In this race the chosen one of each princess has to complete a series of tasks and bring back a jeweled replica of the Star of Dawn to the Parmettian palace. The first one to retrieve the Star and make it back becomes king. The deity of Parmette then blesses the king with the Star of Dawn on his forehead and magical powers. The Parmettian deity is actually the Magic Queen disguised as a fairy-like creature.

Inaho: The land of Inaho is inspired by ancient Japan, typified by wooden structures, sloped thatched roofs, and sliding doors. The inhabitants are also shown wearing kimonos, instead of armor or tunics, in order to emphasize this fact. Inaho is also an island country much like Japan. The country used to belong to Gods, but due to a falling out between the Magic Kingdom people and the Buddha people the Gods of Inaho were pushed to the very south of the country. The Gods of Inaho refer to the Buddha as the Hotoke, foreign deities that don’t belong. Apart from the northern capital, inhabited by the Buddha, there are other, more specific locations mentioned in Inaho.

Dragon Palace: The palace is home to the Dragon God, his daughter Princess Oto, his turtle subjects, and the odd dragon. The palace is located under the ocean off of Inaho’s shores and is difficult to get to without assistance.

Fire Land: Unlike its namesake, the Fire Land is not a land of fire, it’s merely home to Lady Nano, the Sun Goddess, the temperamental, selfish, bratty Goddess of the Sun whose mood effects whether the people will have light or darkness, stormy or fair weather. She is the little sister of the Dragon God.

The reason that the Buddha people muscled in on the Gods had to do with the Queen of the Magic Kingdom once again. When she was a princess the Magic Queen fell in love with a prince from the Magic Kingdom, but a young man from the Buddha clan also fell in love with her. She was torn between the two, but she married the Magic Prince creating a rivalry between the Magic Kingdom and the Buddha people which eventually led to the Buddha people migrating to, and taking over much of Inaho.

Demon Island: Is the fourth location in Gokudo no Manyuki, it’s a small island that Rubette and her friends briefly take refuge on. Not much is known about this island other than the fact that its rocky terrain resembles the face of a monster.

Chinginzai: Chinginzai is a vast land that looks like ancient China, from the misty rolling mountains, to the talking pandas, and bamboo. Not much can be said about the country as a whole, other than the fact that there are little villages scattered throughout. There are a few points of interest however and both of these landmarks come with their own interesting properties and stories.

Horai Mountain: The Mountain was once a paradise until a monkey, born from a stone, by the name of Goku started causing mayhem. He stole the peach of immortality which granted him eternal life and god-like powers. In order to subdue Goku, sages from all over Chinginzai came and imprisoned him inside of Horai Mountain, but he was freed by a meteor that struck the mountain. Eventually a monk by the name of Sanzo would come and turn Horai into a demon riddled Hell. So not only does Chinginzai resemble China in appearance, it takes a leaf out of the pages of Chinese literature by incorporating the “Journey to the West” story.

Tarilarian Desert: The Desert located somewhere in the depths of Chinginzai, is a very interesting region. While vast and desolate like most deserts it comes with an interesting curse. The curse has two parts, the first part is that it reveals a person for who they really are, and this includes creatures and magical beings that possess alternate forms. The second part is that anyone who spends too much time in the desert becomes Tarilarian…meaning they lose their sense of self and they can only say Tarilarian over and over. The only protection against this is wearing a Tiger’s cloak.

While Chinginzai doesn’t have much in the way of social structure it does have a king, King Yama who presides over Horai, but his role is never expanded upon since he’s trapped in a giant egg throughout most of the series. There is also the Queen Mother West who lives in a palace on the other end of the Tarilarian desert. She is an anthropomorphic Tiger with special powers and…guess what? She is also the Queen of the Magic Kingdom.

Yamo: Yamo describes a region of the world with a vast forest and smack dab in the middle of the forest is a village. The village of Yamo has a very Polynesian affect to it; it’s very…Tiki-Tiki…in its influence. Tiki masks, Tiki huts, Tiki torches, Tiki totems. Not only that it seems that the people of the village have an interest in sacrifice, they sacrifice outsiders to their Moon Goddess, Negana Luna. In truth the sacrifice doesn’t die, but the Goddess uses their body as a host avatar until she is done. There is also a rival Sun God (different from Inaho’s Sun Goddess) called Ryu Gee and for a brief time he overthrows Negana Luna and turns her Spring of Life into a Spring of Fire. The Spring of Life is a treasure of the people of Yamo, it turns the elderly into young men and women and it turns infants into young men and women. So it has the power to age and to reverse age. Gokudo seeks out its power when he is transformed into an infant.

Heaven: Heaven is where the Gods and the Buddha come from. That’s really all that is known about Heaven. In Inaho it is revealed that a “treasure” also called the Dragon God’s Treasure or the Soul of Inaho allows the Gods and the Buddha to exist outside of heaven. The Soul of Inaho is a sphere that looks like a yin-yang symbol protected by a larger glass sphere. When it is broken the Gods and the Buddha of Inaho are sucked back up into Heaven. Clearly this only had an effect on the Gods and the Buddha of Inaho, because we can see the influence of the Buddha in Chinginzai and the influence of Gods in Yamo. There’s no explanation for what holds them to their appointed lands.

The Magic Kingdom: Like with Heaven not much is known about the Magic Kingdom other than the fact that it’s the home of the Magical Royal Family and a number of magical beings like Pegasus, the Sphinx, and the demon Ikkyo. Creatures can be summoned from the Magic World by use of a magic circle, though the stronger the magical creature the greater their capacity is for entering the human world without the means of a magic circle. Apparently the Magic Kingdom exists on an entirely different platitude, but there are no details. It is known that more magical countries, like Parmette, play host to a number of magical creatures that leak their way into Parmette due to the saturation of magic in the land.

Magical Beings, Gods, and the Buddha

The Magical Beings, Gods, and the Buddha are important elements in the series causing much strife in some form or other to our merry band of misfits: Gokudo, Rubette, Djinn, and Prince Niari. While some are content to live in the human world without much kerfuffle, for the most part they expedite human misery. Not always to a painful degree, some places are shown to be very tolerant of these beings while other places have suffered under their influence.

Magical Beings: While there are certain similarities between the more familiar and significantly more popular series, Slayers, such as the whole magic and swords, comedy and adventure motif the two cannot be compared. There is no organization of magic such as black magic, holy magic, white magic, and shamanism. Things just aren’t that tidy in the world of Gokudo no Manyuki and all magic is lumped together: defensive magic, offensive magic, healing magic, shape shifting magic, magical Haute Couture robots. Depending on where you are on the magical hierarchy affects magical abilities. The Parmettian princesses, while human, fall somewhere under the royal family of the Magic Kingdom…mostly due to the fact that their powers and knowledge were bestowed upon them by the Magic Queen herself.

The Magic Queen: The Magic Queen, while not a major character in the series is the catalyst for much of what happens throughout. She is the puppet master and the great manipulator, often testing Gokudo and the others or tricking them into doing all of her dirty work. The Magic Queen has many names and faces she uses to disguise herself from the rest of the cast so that she can actively watch them and control them without being discovered. She appears most commonly as short, cloaked, cane toting old crone called Granny. It was Granny who told the King of Eshalotto that he would kill his son. Granny was also responsible for the creation of Gokudo as when the king killed his son she brought him back but she accidentally split him into two beings—the immoral swordsman and adventurer, Gokudo, and the noble yet clumsy gentleman, Seiji.

In the first arc she disguises herself as the beautiful maiden, Mora, and using her powers of premonition leads the cast around the Eshalotto palace. Her motive is to have Gokudo, Seiji, and the others seal her husband, The Magic King, back up in the magic world.

In the second arc she disguises herself as the Parmettian deity that they worship in Parmette, again she is beautiful, she takes the form of a small fairy-like creature who acts as Gokudo’s guide when her son, Prince Niari, starts running amok in the human world. Gokudo is again tricked by Granny who has lost her memory in her fairy form…though this probably isn’t the case. Gokudo is sacrificed in order for the fairy-like deity to regain her memory, by sacrifice Gokudo ends up kissing the fairy and she returns to her horrible Granny form while Gokudo ends up temporarily petrified by having kissed ugly old Granny.

Granny doesn’t appear in the third arc, but she is indirectly responsible for the events. It was her marriage to the Magic King that led to the rivalry between the Magic people and the Buddha people. Because of that the Buddha ended up moving into Inaho, taking over the territory of the Gods, and inevitably stealing the Dragon God’s Treasure which Rubette and the others have to retrieve in order to restore the Dragon God’s powers.

In the fourth arc she presents herself as the tiger queen, Queen Mother West, and she pretty much kicks back while the others seal the Buddha in Chinginsai in a black hole in space. She could have aided the characters, but decided not to, testing them and reveling in the fact they were doing her all of the work for her.

And in the final arc Granny appears in her true form, this form is called the Madonna, a beautiful, young, winged woman…with the voice of an old woman. Gokudo and Rubette became the hosts of the gods Negana Luna and Ryu Gee. Since it’s the Magic Queen's job to, both, interfere and maintain balance, she summoned the Buddha, Indra, to destroy Gokudo and Rubette. It turned out she was merely testing them and while she still doesn’t like the fact that they have gods residing within them she decided to keep watching them instead.

So many of the events that effect the main cast are a result of the Magic Queen interfering and meddling either directly or indirectly.

The Magic King: The Magic King is also indirectly responsible for everything that happens to Gokudo and his gang. He appears briefly in the first arc posing as the Eshalotto King, but the King’s desires ruinied him, he sold his soul to the Magic King and was thus consumed by him. Posing as the Eshalotto King the Magic King had maidens kidnapped all throughout the empire. Granny recruited Gokudo and the others to help her fight the Magic King because she believes their people should not interfere with the human realm. Their battle turns into a married couples spat that ends with Seiji and Gokudo using their combined power to seal the Magic King back in the magic world.

The Magic Prince Niari: The Prince of the Magic Kingdom, Niari, in much the same fashion as his father interfered in the human world as well. In the second arc he disrupts the Race to be King and kidnaps all three of the Parmettian Princesses. Having grown tired of the women in his world he traversed to the human world. He was stopped by his mother eventually and she reduced his magic to beginners level. Afterward Gokudo became his parole officer.

Djinn: Djinn is a shape shifting, wish granting magical entity from the Magic Kingdom. He becomes Gokudo’s companion after Gokudo steals him from Granny thinking he’d grabbed gold when he really grabbed a rock with Djinn inside. Djinn questions the moral implications of Gokudo’s wishes (money, power, and babes) and instead of granting them he lectures Gokudo and tells Gokudo that he’ll have to follow him until he grants Gokudo three wishes…but since he refuses to grant Gokudo’s selfish wishes he becomes the irritating moral compass often causing Gokudo more trouble as opposed to genuinely helping.

Ikkyo: Ikkyo is a demon from the Magic Kingdom; he is summoned to the human world in order to help Gokudo with the Sphinx’s riddle—one of the obstacles in the Race to be King. Unfortunately Ikkyo’s services often come with a price, one soul per favor. Gokudo promises Ikkyo the soul of Issa in return for his help. Issa is Gokudo’s guide throughout the Parmettian Empire, not only that he is an armature magic user who can barely cast a fireball spell and the fiancé of Parmettian Princess, Coco. When Issa’s soul is taken by Ikkyo, the wrath of Coco comes down on Gokudo’s head.

Pegasus: Pegasus is the steed of one of the Race to be King Champions; Pegasus is eventually passed on to Rubette. Apart from being another magical creature her role in the series is relatively minor.

The Sphinx: As mentioned above, the Sphinx is a magical being summoned from the Magic Kingdom to be an obstacle in the Race to be King. Her riddle for Gokudo and his companions is to bring her a “tear drop” from the moon. When Ikkyo solves her riddle by giving her a drop of liquid in a bottle and saying if she opened it the tear would turn into water (she couldn’t prove otherwise without opening the bottle) she let them pass. The Sphinx does not get along with the demon Ikkyo.

Gods: It is often difficult to tell the various supernatural beings in the world of Gokudo no Manyuki apart since they all have strange shapes and special abilities. Godly powers can often be mistaken for magic, or a different kind of magic as Niari refers to it. Usually a God will announce that they are a God and a Buddha will announce that they are a Buddha to avoid confusion. It is implied that the Gods use a system of spells that the Magic people can’t break—though it is not impossible for Magic people to inflict harm on the Gods using their brand of magic.

The Dragon God: The Dragon God is one of the Gods of Inaho that was pushed to the southern end of the island with the coming of the Buddha. The Buddha stole the “treasure” of the Dragon God weakening him, so when Gokudo comes to the Dragon God looking for a cure to the curse that the God’s daughter, Princess Oto, placed on him, the Dragon God sends Gokudo on a quest to retrieve the “treasure,” but not before giving Gokudo a temporary cure to his ailment. The Dragon God’s domain is the sea, he controls the ocean and everything in it.

Hanishi: The Hanishi are the worshipers of the Dragon God.

The Sun Goddess: The Sun Goddess is the younger sister of the Dragon God. She looks and acts very much like a child, she is prone to temper tantrums when she doesn’t get her way, and can cause changes in the weather and create eclipses when she’s feeling temperamental. She christens Gokudo with the nickname “Stinky” and generally makes him miserable.

Hagashi: The Hagashi are the worshippers of the Sun Goddess.

Princess Oto: Princess Oto is the reason Gokudo ends up traveling to Inaho in order to seek out the Dragon God. During the Race to be King, Gokudo steals a box from the King’s Tomb, located in a pyramid that was reconstructed to be a trap and riddle filled maze (another obstacle). The box was actually cursed by Princess Oto. A human man broke her heart and in her rage she sent a cursed box filled with a powdered substance that would turn the individual who opened the box into an old person. This is an example of how the gods use their powers indiscriminately when vexed by humans.

Negana Luna: Negana Luna is the Moon Goddess worshipped by the people of Yamo. She is also the creator of the Spring of Life which was transformed into a Spring of Fire when the Sun God, Ryu Gee overthrew her for a time. In order to combat Ryu Gee, Rubette was unwillingly elected to be the avatar, or host body, of the Goddess. This meant that Rubette would be used by Negana Luna until the Goddess decided to abandon her body. Fortunately Rubette’s strong will and her belief that people should be free to live their lives was enough to overcome Negana Luna and instead of becoming the avatar, Rubette became the master of Negana Luna and was imbued with the goddess’s power.

Ryu Gee: Is the Sun God rival of Negana Luna and for a time he overthrows the goddess, manipulating the people of Yamo into worshipping him and doing his bidding. He devours Gokudo in an attempt to use his body, but in much the same fashion as Rubette, he is unsuccessful and he ends up being mastered by Gokudo instead. He briefly turns the Spring of Life into a Spring of Fire. Gokudo also received the powers of Ryu Gee.

The Buddha: The Buddha are a clan of beings that hold to a hypocritical belief of love and justice while using aggressive means to force the Gods out of their land and stealing treasures from them. They believe that nothingness is equality and that the only way for people to truly be happy is if everything is returned to nothing.

Indra: Indra is of the Buddha clan; he manipulates the Emperor of Inaho and hides in the body of one of the country's two princes. He is responsible for pushing the gods out of their lands so that they can only reside in the southernmost region of Inaho. It is revealed that he is the one who was in love with the Queen of the Magic Kingdom before she picked the Magic King. He offers to kill Gokudo and the gang if the Magic Queen would abandon her current husband in order to be his bride.

Ng: Ng is one of the Buddha people, a warrior in the service of Indra.

Ah: Ah is the companion of Ng, he is also a warrior in the service of Indra.

Miroku: It is not actually a Buddha, but a device created by the Buddha known as the Savior Device. Miroku is a humanoid creature inside of a lotus flower designed to make people as happy as they are unhappy. Miroku’s true purpose, however, is to return everything to nothing, but the Buddha realized their mistake in creating it and thus sealed it away. Miroku was never meant to exist.

Items and Miscellaneous Things

The Magic Sword: This sword once belonged to the King of the Eshalotto Empire but it was passed to his son, the young prince that he killed. When Granny brought the prince back to life, splitting him in half, she split the magic sword as well. Originally the sword was one weapon that controlled both the elements of fire and ice, now with the sword split into two, one sword controls fire and the other sword controls ice individually. Gokudo’s magic sword is the one that control’s fire, his other half has the magic sword of ice.

The Magic Bow: Once Granny realized how volatile and unreliable Gokudo was she granted Rubette the gift of the Magic Bow. It’s a sphere that expands into a bow upon her command making it easier to handle and inconspicuous. It shoots an infinite number of arrows.

Solomon’s Ring: Rubette took this ring from the King’s Tomb, it enables her to understand the language of animals.

Oto’s Cursed Box: The cursed box is the result of Princess Oto’s wrath. Spurned by a man she sent this cursed box out into the world so that some unfortunate soul might open it and be sprayed with the aging powder inside.

The Soul of Inaho: Or the Dragon God’s Treasure is a sphere resembling the yin-yang, it is the source of power in Inaho for both the God’s and the Buddha and it is also what holds them to the human world.

The Savior Device: Also known as Miroku, the Savior Device was designed to make a person as happy as they are unhappy, but it is also a weapon created by the Buddha in order to return the world to nothingness.

Spring of Life: The spring is a lake in the land of Yamo that can both reverse the aging process or speed it up. It can transform an infant into a young man or woman and it can return youth to the elderly.

Personality:

Rubette is generally a fair-minded and level-headed individual, but her temper is hair-trigger and when the right buttons are pushed she will let loose her wrath. Most of the time she unloads by blowing her top and simply yelling herself hoarse, other times she can be quite violent. She tends to give as good as she gets and treats others the way she is treated. If someone is civil to her then she returns the favor, if someone has an attitude with her she has one right back. She has no problem laughing at the expense of others if they deserve it and she will go out of her way to help and defend others if they really need it.

As a tomboy Rubette has one singular weakness and that is romance. She prefers slaying dragons and thwarting her enemies as opposed to handsome princes and love. When topics of romance are brought up it’s generally somewhat awkward for her and depending on how the topic is handled she can become quite brutal. For instance Gokudo mocks her in the second arc by saying the reason she’s following him is because she has a crush on him. This results in Rubette kicking him over the edge of a cliff and Gokudo dying…but of course he is resurrected. While love isn’t something she could see herself embroiled in, if the topic is mentioned by the right person with more sensitivity than Gokudo she is shown to become embarrassed. She can become passionate in her embarrassment as well, though unintentionally.

Rubette is proud of her ability to fight, being both adept with a sword and a bow…not to mention her hands and feet. If ever there was a way to manipulate her, complimenting her fighting prowess would be it. It is the area where she shows some vanity and she’s not a particularly vain person. In fact she isn’t keen on people who are too full of themselves which is why she doesn’t always get along with the self-absorbed Prince Niari. On top of that Niari believes that he is god’s gift to women which she despises even more. She also tends not to think too highly of women who lead men on or women who fall for the false charms of men like most women do where Niari is concerned. She thinks it is weak. In any case her vanity stems from the fact that she knows she’s not a helpless little girl, she can take care of herself…as long as Gokudo isn’t going around behind her back and sacrificing her to one cause or another.

Rubette is also the type that does not like being told what to do, especially by Gokudo who tends to demand her to do things. She has no problem complying with requests or following rules that coincide with her personal moral compass which is a fairly concrete one. She’s not the poster girl for ethics, mind, she did steal Solomon’s Ring from the King’s Tomb and she’s not above beating the stuffing out of her travel companions if they annoy her. Excessive greed, manipulation, and encroaching on the free will of others are just a few things that do strike her moral center.

Speaking of free will, this is something that Rubette values above all else. When Negana Luna threatened to take control of her body, Rubette came up swinging as hard as she could. Even though her battle with the goddess took place within her own consciousness it was Rubette’s strength of will that allowed her to come out dominating, mastering Negana Luna instead. Rubette’s philosophy is that no one should ever control the life of another, even if it is a god, and that people (herself included) should have the chance to live by their own rules as long as it doesn't hurt anyone else. It is because of this philosophy that Rubette left the Eshalotto Empire in the first place, the life of a lady was not only boring but confining for someone with a strong will, a curious mind, and a sense of adventure.

Abilities, Weaknesses, and Power Limitation Suggestions:

Martial Arts: Rubette is pretty handy with her fists and her feet, she specializes in jump kicks but she can be seen punching or throwing her enemies…or allies, depending on the situation. Even though she is physically strong, her strength does not exceed the limits of human capabilities.

Swordsmanship: In a pinch Rubette is very handy with a sword, she’s not the expert that Gokudo is, but she’s very competent and versatile in her use of the weapon.

Marksman: Rubette is a superb marksman, though she has been known to miss on purpose, giving her allies a scare every now and then when they irritate her. Rubette’s primary weapon is a Magical Bow with unlimited arrows, but the problem with having any kind of weapon, magical or no, is that it can be taken from her or knocked out of her hand. It also appears that the arrows of the Magical Bow are designed to pierce organic objects as the arrows either bounce off of or disperse when it comes into contact with solid, inorganic matter. The only exception seems to be when Rubette is utilizing the arrows along with her newly attained Negana Luna abilities.

Negana Luna: Rubette was imbued with the powers of the goddess Negana Luna which grants her a few additional abilities along with the ones she already possesses, including strengthening her magic arrows, flight, and creating protective barriers. This is an easy ability to limit as Negana Luna is a Moon Goddess her powers are only accessible when the moon is high and would clearly not be accessible to her in the absence of moonlight. (Artificial moonlight and power reduction might require some discussion with a mod.)

Romance and Temper: Being mentally strong means that there’s very little that can rattle her cage or throw her off kilter, but whenever the subject of romance comes up, especially if it concerns Rubette herself, she’s liable to become nervous. While her nerves have the potential to make her unintentionally aggressive, she also becomes very distracted. She’s also quick to anger when the right buttons are pushed and when she’s in a temper she can act irrationally.

Inventory: Apart from the clothing on her back the only two things Rubette consistently has on her person is the sphere that transforms into the Magic Bow and Solomon’s Ring.

Appearance: Rubette doesn’t have any official stats, so some things are merely guesses. She is a pretty young girl, fair skin, and aside from the blue symbol of Negana Luna on her backside she has no other defining traits. She has wild, shoulder length blonde hair and a green headband that is tied around her head. Her eyes are a violet blue and she seems to be of average height and weight for a girl her age and physical strength—best ball park guess is 5’5” and 120lbs. She fancies herself in a green dress with an orange wrap tied around her waist. The wrap seems to have storage capacity since it’s where she hides the sphere that turns into the Magic Bow. She wears blue leggings, brown boots, and red gloves—there’s also a string of red oval gems that hang around her neck.

Age: Roughly 18 years old.

Okay. So a greasy dumpling restaurant that reeked of garlic wasn’t exactly the highlight of her adventures so far…well she couldn’t say this little enterprise she’d undertaken with her less than reputable comrade had been riddled with too much excitement. There had been no dragons to slay or enemies to fight and sometimes Rubette wished she was back in that dungeon. She wanted to recapture what it felt like to bring down a sword on a foe or vanquish the Magic King with her magic arrows. So far all they had succeeded in doing was tricking some poor, unsuspecting victims out of whatever resources they had available and stuffed their faces. Well actually she’d watched Gokudo do most of these things after she flat out refused to participate.

It wasn’t that Rubette was the most morally sound individual in the world, she had no problem playing the part of the vigilante and giving the odd highwayman a good thrashing. She had no problem laughing at the misfortunes of others when they deserved it, or even unleashing her temper on her companion when the situation called for it. It usually did…and she’d never feel guilty. Rubette, however, was motivated by more than money and trickery, or maybe she was just above such base behaviors. She wanted to prove that she was a disciplined warrior…and that a girl could be as fierce a fighter as any man! She also longed for adventure and since the adventure had been sucked right out of the Eshalotto Empire with the banishment of the Magic King, she had no choice but to leave…and even though he was the scum of the earth, adventure had a way of finding Gokudo.

Speaking of which, she couldn’t find that greedy, sword-swinging, King of the Losers anywhere. In spite of the potential for action, sometimes Rubette wasn’t even sure why she was following him really, but since he claimed to be the world’s greatest adventurer she figured she would stick it out with him for a little while. So far it had been a drag…well they had only set out a few days ago so maybe the first few days were supposed to be a drag. Right? But she didn’t have time to contemplate the matter before her thoughts were interrupted by a man who dropped into the seat right across from her. He was a stout man, slimy; the kind of guy a gal didn’t want to bump into while walking down a dark alley. He took a hold of Rubette’s hands and gave her a simpering smile…she felt nauseated already.

“Y-yeah…er…can I help you?” She yanked her hands back and gave the man a seething look; it was a warning that he’d better not try anything funny. He looked like the funny-thing-trying type.

“Well, you see miss, you belong to me for the rest of the day and the rest of the night,” the man said, his voice like a croak.

It took Rubette a moment to register the proposal before she nearly fell out of her chair, “WHAT!”

“It’s true, a young swordsman with blond hair said that if I paid him one-hundred gold coins up front I could have you,”

Blond…Swordsman…Gold? That had the stench of Gokudo all over it, it was typical of him to bait people for money…but using Rubette La Lette as bait, that was crossing line, “Gokudo you twerp!”

She made to get up, but before she could the man stayed her, waving his hands, “h…hey, what about the gold…I bought you, I want my money’s worth!”

“Oh? Okay…I’ll give you your money’s worth,” Rubette said in a voice oozing with false sweetness. If there was one thing she couldn’t stand it was a man who thought he could buy off a woman with money and trinkets. Rubette wasn’t so easily bought; she had more pride in herself than that. With a crack of her knuckles she gave the man his money’s worth and then some before dashing out of the restaurant. Now she had a new reason to chase Gokudo down…revenge! If she couldn’t slay dragons she could at least slay him and what a grand adventure that would be!

[The viewer might notice that there is an image of a girl phasing in and out every few seconds. Clearly we have a wearable, and possibly a technological, neophyte on our hands here which is exactly what Rubette is. So she’s playing around with the device on her wrist and it takes several moments for her image to come into focus again.]

Huh? Well that’s a little anti-climactic, isn’t it…no boom? Not even a magical spark? No soul sucking demons? Ahah…well I guess that can’t be counted as a minus; I don’t feel like haggling with Ikkyo over my soul just to get some answers. [She waves at the hologram expecting it to do…something?] Hmm…as painful as it was I think the jaunt through the scrapheap was more exciting than this…what was that “please watch your step” stuff about anyway? Sarcasm…or was it an afterthought?

[When the thing around her wrist doesn’t respond the her interrogation, Rubette gives up on it with the flap of a hand.] Still not talking…well that’s okay, I don’t need your help…I can figure this out on my own…and don’t try and tell me that I’m not capable just because I’m a girl.

[It’s almost as if she’s expecting it to argue with her because she’s giving the screen that look.]
